How many do you need to seat?

Sets are sized in people, not square feet. Start with who actually shows up, not the biggest set that fits, and the right one narrows itself down fast.

• 1–2 guests — A 3-piece bistro set fits a space as small as 6 × 6 ft, or go with a pair of chaise loungers and a side table.
• 3–4 guests — A 5-piece dining set (table + 4 chairs) plans out to about 8 × 8 ft, or size a 4-piece conversation set around a 100 sq ft footprint.
• 5–6 guests — A 7-piece dining set (table + 6 chairs) needs roughly 10 × 10 ft, or step up to a 6-piece sectional.
• 7–8 guests — A 9-piece dining set (table + 8 chairs), or an 8-piece modular conversation set.
• 8+ guests — Go modular. Pair a dining set with a separate lounge set, or add armless sectional pieces as the guest list grows.

Know your set types

Four set types cover almost every patio. Match the type to what you'll actually do out there, then size it with the amount of seats you need.

• Conversation set — Chairs (and sometimes a loveseat) around a low coffee table, built for talking, not eating.
• Dining set — A table sized to its chair count, standard seat height, for meals, not lounging.
• Bar & counter dining set — Same idea as a dining set, raised to bar or counter height for a rail, deck edge, or kitchen pass-through.
• Chaise lounge set — Full recline loungers, usually sold in pairs with a shared side table, built for poolside.

What's actually in a "set"?

The piece count in a set's name isn't marketing. It's a literal parts list. Here's how to read it before you check the box dimensions.

• 3-piece = 2 chairs + 1 side table. Seats 2.
• 5-piece = 4 chairs + 1 dining table. Seats 4.
• 7-piece = 6 chairs + 1 dining table. Seats 6.
• 9-piece = 8 chairs + 1 dining table. Seats 8.
• 4-piece conversation = 2 chairs + 1 loveseat + 1 coffee table. Seats 3–4.
• 5-piece bar = 4 stools + 1 bar table. Seats 4, standing height.

Cushions ship with the set. Unlike a standalone chair, every dining, conversation, and chaise set includes cushions pre-matched to the frame finish — nothing to order separately.

The material: HDPE, explained

Every piece in every set, chairs, table, loveseat, is built from the same HDPE, so there's no weak link that ages faster than the rest.

Each piece is built from solid HDPE, engineered for real outdoor weather rather than just resisting it. The color runs all the way through the material instead of sitting on top of it, then every piece is assembled like real woodworking: routed, screwed, and finished with stainless hardware. Because the color goes all the way through, scratches and scuffs don't expose a different color underneath the way a painted or stained surface does.

Size it right

Once you know your set, these are the footprints to actually plan the patio around, table and chairs together, not just the tabletop.

• 36" minimum from the table's edge to the nearest wall or railing, so every chair can pull all the way out.
• 24" to 30" of aisle behind each seated dining chair.
• Counter vs. bar height: counter sets pair a 34" to 36" table with a 23" to 28" stool; bar sets pair a 40" to 42" table with a 27" to 33" stool. Either way, leave 24" to 30" behind each stool to sit and stand.
• Chaise lounges run 73" to 80" long. Budget about 6 x 3 ft per chair, or 13 to 15 ft of linear space for a pair sharing a side table.
• 30" to 36" walkway clearance around the outside of any set, regardless of type.

Care: what you'll actually do

HDPE was built to skip the seasonal ritual entirely. No covers, no storage, no oiling, just an occasional rinse.
