Start with your space
Before any color or chair style, the patio, porch, or dock itself sets the boundaries — walkway clearance, overhead clearance for a hanging swing, and how big a conversation area can actually sit comfortably.
- Measure the full footprint first, including railings, posts, or steps that eat into usable space.
- Keep a 36" walkway clear on at least one side of any seating group — 30" minimum if space is tight.
- Plan an 8–10 ft circle for a conversation set of four to six seats; anything smaller starts to feel like knees-in-a-huddle.
- Hanging a porch swing? Leave at least 24" of ground clearance and 30" of overhead swing arc front-to-back.
Know your seating types
Our HDPE lineup covers seven distinct jobs. Matching the type to how you'll actually use the space matters more than any color decision.
| Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Adirondack chair | The signature silhouette: deep angled seat, wide armrests, often foldable for storage. |
| Rocking chair | Same upright comfort as a porch classic, built to never need repainting. |
| Conversation / sectional set | Modular corner and armless pieces that reconfigure as the group grows. |
| Dining chair | Upright seating sized for a table, sold solo or in matched sets. |
| Chaise lounge | Reclining, often wheeled, built for poolside and dock use. |
| Porch swing & bar stool | Hanging swings for the porch; counter- and bar-height stools for the rail. |
The material: HDPE, explained
We build exclusively in HDPE (high-density poly lumber) — no teak, no wicker, no painted aluminum to maintain. Here's what that means and how it stacks up against the materials you've probably owned before.
HOW HDPE COMPARES
| Attribute | HDPE Our Material |
Painted / Stained Wood | Aluminum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | None — no oil, stain, or sealant, ever | Sand and reseal yearly or it grays and cracks | Rinse; touch up chipped powder-coat |
| Weather range | -58°F to 122°F, stays outside year-round | Warps or rots through freeze-thaw cycles uncovered | Handles most climates; can pit near salt air |
| Lifespan | 20–50 years, 20-year warranty | 5–15 years depending on species and upkeep | 15–20 years |

HDPE Color & finish 101
Because color runs through the material rather than sitting on top of it, we can offer more of it.
Cushions, when you want them
Adirondack and rocking chairs are molded to sit comfortably bare. Sectionals, dining, and chaise pieces take a cushion.
Solution dyed acrylic covers resist fading and mildew far longer than printed or piece dyed polyester.
Quick-dry, reticulated foam lets rainwater pass through instead of pooling. It should spring back fast when you press it.
Removable, zippered covers mean the cushion can be washed instead of replaced when it stains.
"Water-resistant" ≠ "waterproof." Resistant fabric sheds a shower; waterproof fabric (often vinyl-backed) survives a cushion left out overnight.
Size it right
A handful of standard clearances make the difference between a patio that flows and one that feels like an obstacle course.
18" between a coffee table and the front edge of any seat — enough to cross legs, not enough to lose a shin.
24–26" per person around a dining table, measured chair-center to chair-center.
29" x 34" is a typical folded-open Adirondack chair footprint — leave room for the reclined angle behind it.
30–36" walkway clearance around the outside of any seating group, matching Chapter 01.
Care: what you'll actually do
HDPE was built to skip the seasonal ritual entirely. No covers, no storage, no oiling, just an occasional rinse.
NEVER REQUIRED
- × Annual oiling, staining, or sealing
- × Winter covers or off-season storage
- × Repainting after a season in direct sun
- × Worrying about freeze-thaw cracking
THE ACTUAL ROUTINE
- ✓ Hose it down when it's dusty
- ✓ Mild soap and water for spills or stains
- ✓ Leave it out year-round, rain or shine
